چکیده

Considering that the mechanical mechanism and energy release law of gradual failure columnar jointed basalt (CJB) are affected by lateral pressure, rock heterogeneity column irregularity, etc., numerical CJB models with various dip angles, irregularity degrees pressures were established through digital image correlation. The progressive process released CJBs simulated under loading rate 0.05 mm/step based continuum mechanics statistical damage theory. influences inhomogeneity, degree, model boundary on nonlinear deformation comprehensively investigated. results demonstrate effect inhomogeneity index depends angle, equivalent modulus is more sensitive to than pressure. Moreover, compressive strength along direction perpendicular axis basically decreases degree increasing when meso 120 MPa. Besides, properties elastic irregular greatly boundaries. These achievements will contribute understanding inner evolution CJBs.

Clay-shoveler's fracture during indoor rock climbing.

Indoor rock climbing is becoming more popular for people of all ages. Despite the tremendous interest in this competitive sport, participants are made aware of the dangers associated with participating. The authors present the first reported case of a clay-shoveler's fracture at the T1 spinous process during indoor rock climbing. They describe the management and natural history of this fracture...

Evolution of fracture permeability through fluid–rock reaction under hydrothermal conditions

We report flow-through experiments on a natural fracture in novaculite under moderate effective stresses (∼1.4 MPa) and temperatures (20–120 °C) to examine the effect on flow and transport characteristics. The efflux of fluid and dissolved minerals were measured throughout the 3150-h experiment. After the experiment the fracture was imaged by X-ray CT, impregnated with Wood's metal, and a cast ...

Compaction of a Rock Fracture Moderated by Competing Roles of Stress Corrosion and Pressure Solution

Unusually rapid closure of stressed fractures, observed in the initial stages of loading and at low temperatures, is examined using models for subcritical crack growth and pressure solution. The model for stress corrosion examines tensile stress concentrations induced at the Hertzian contact of propping fracture asperities, and mediates fracture growth according to a kinetic rate law. Conversel...

Optical properties of wurtzite and rock-salt ZnO under pressure

This paper reports on the pressure dependence of the optical absorption edge of ZnO in the wurtzite and rock-salt phase, up to 14 GPa. Both vapor-phase monocrystals and pulsed-laser-deposition thin films have been investigated. In both types of samples the wurtzite to rocksalt transition is observed at 9.7G0.2 GPa. The absorption tail of the fundamental gap, as measured in monocrystals, exhibit...

Finite Element Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Column Under Lateral Load

To serve its purpose a structure must be safe against collapse and serviceable in use. Serviceability requires that deflections be adequately small to keep the cracks within tolerable limits. Although the widely followed ACI Code suggests a detailed method of deflection calculation, it often cannot exactly perceive the actual behavior of a structure. For this purpose, finite element analysis, u...
